Jamille was my first typeface family. I began designing it in 1981 at graduate school and developed it throughout the following years while I learned font production in URW’s type studio and then worked as an independent designer in Hamburg, Germany. Shortly after completion, the International Typeface Corporation expressed interest in it and so it entered the market in 1988 as ITC Jamille. The original version of Jamille continues to be sold under this name by Monotype Inc.
The concept for Jamille was relatively simple – a modern (or “Didone”) type with concave stems and contemporary modeling – and it is this concept which maintains its uniqueness. Jamille is a workhorse typeface, applicable in both display and text settings, which is not only refreshingly different but also suitable for tasks that require a classic look.
Jamille is just right for anyone who enjoys working with modern types and is interested in using something other than Bodoni or Didot. For its release at TypeCulture, the original Jamille type family has been improved, greatly expanded into large character sets and loaded with OpenType features. Lively swash caps have also been created exclusively for TypeCulture. The result is the most advanced, versatile and extensive version of Jamille on the market.
I named my first typeface for my dad, Jamille Jamra, who certainly deserves a greater honor, but it was the best I could do at the time.
